What is Basic Strategy?
Basic strategy is a mathematically derived set of rules that tells you the optimal action for every possible hand combination against any dealer upcard. It was developed in the 1950s by mathematicians using computer simulations of millions of hands. It doesn’t guarantee a win on every hand — no strategy can — but it maximises your expected return over time.
The Core Rules
Always stand on a hard 17 or higher. The risk of busting outweighs any potential gain. Always hit on a hard 8 or less — you cannot bust, so there is no downside. Double down on 11 against any dealer card except an Ace, and on 10 against any dealer card from 2 through 9. Split Aces and Eights — always. Two Aces gives you two chances at 21; two Eights means you’re splitting a terrible hand (16) into two better ones.
Soft Hands Explained
A soft hand contains an Ace counted as 11. Always hit soft 17 (Ace + 6) even though it totals 17, because the Ace can drop to 1 if you draw a high card. Stand on soft 18 against weak dealer cards (2–8), but hit against a 9, 10, or Ace.
Choosing the Right Table
Look for tables that pay 3:2 on blackjack, not 6:5. That single rule change significantly increases the house edge against you. Fewer decks are also better — a single-deck game offers better odds than an eight-deck shoe.
Practice Makes Perfect
Most online casinos offer free play blackjack. Use it to drill basic strategy until it becomes instinctive. You can also download a basic strategy card — casinos allow them at the table because even with the chart, the house still maintains its edge. The goal is to make it as slim as possible.
